Fry's Electronics. Ew.

Not interested in another couple months of RMA fiascoes.

I've bought from Newwegg, TG, MWave, ClubIt, etc. I can honestly say fry's has never had a deal I wanted. Or they had a good B&M deal, but that dosnt help me. But if they are that bad I hear XFX is good with their RMAs, just go straight to them.

i currently have a XFX8800GTX just like the one linked but i couldnt tell you about rma cus mine has no problems. i bought this when i built my computer, they just came out with the ultra back in the day. i haven't tried a whole lot of video card makers but xfx is my favorite at the moment.

I guess you like to RMA them in pairs :aetsch:. My XFX 8600gt looks like it might have a problem since it heats up close to 100C on load. Had this problem since i first installed it and XFX said they cant do anything unless it burns out. But their lifetime warranty is nice to have. I love Fry's as long as it's the actually store. Their online department sucks and is a nightmare to work with. Had me playing phone tag for over a month trying to get my defected TV exchanged for a new one.

Few things i'd like to know:
Is your case well ventilated with a good airflow in and out?
Are you running SLI or just 1?
Have you by chance used a program such as "rivatuner" or any other means of setting the fan speeds on them?
What's the ambient temperature of the room the computer is in?
Overclocked any?

If you think you have the right answers for these, it could be the heatsink on the card just was never seated right when they initially put it on, but taking it off often voids most company's warranties.

(lol i got distracted for about an hour trying to get ATI tool to work on vista64 >.<)

anyway..... if i remember right my gpu (XFX8800GTX) would get up to around 85C on stock cooling/settings

Case has pretty good airflow. 2 intake and 2 exhaust fans plus a pci slot exhaust fan. I'm just running one card since i think SLI n Crossfire is pretty much a waste of money. I got the fan speed at 100% so that isn't the issue. I actually under clocked the core to 550mhz since ati tool kept finding artifacts. According to the temp probe the air temp in the case on load is around 85F with room temp of 78F.

LMAO your talking Fahrenheit. if that's true and not a type-o, your temp is fine and actually fairly good.. 85C (which i think was my extreme max on a hot day overclocked etc) is ~185F if your only at 85-90F then damn, put it back to stock your doing fine. GPUs get VERY hot. supposedly my 8800GTX shouldn't get over 100C if so it's suppose to melt or something >.>

85F is my case temp not GPU temp. I have a fan controller with 4 temp probes so I had one suspended near the center of the case to read the case temp. GPU gets close to 100C on load.

yeah something doesnt sound right if it's that warm. i feel like im missing some sort of info to diagnose it. but your probably right with a faulty/badly mounted GPU Heatsink. good luck in your working/fixing it though. i'll try and help if u have any questions
