ok, heres the deal. im thinking on buying a new gaming tower, cus my current one is a bit slow now and id like a little more ummf.

this is what im thinking of
CPU (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115028)
MOBO (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131196)
VID CARD (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150173)
RAM (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227181)
PSU (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182030)
HDD (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136053) 2x-4x (debating size)
CASE (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133037)

this is where the computer builders (zander, squirrl and any others) say "na that ram sux, this is better" etc etc. im thinking on doing some overclocking, like 3.4-3.6 so i might need a more robust PSU (plz give suggestions)

anyway, hope to get some feed back. thx again!

Personally, I'd recommend the Thermaltake Armor that has one of those 250mm/25cm fans in the side. It's what I use and it works fantastically. Nice and quiet will still useful for cooling.

In regards to cases not mattering...yeah, maybe with equipment that has been on the market for multiple years, then the default beige dell case will cool your system enough.

...Does Dell/anyone even still sell plain beige computer cases on any of their ready-built systems anymore? Hell, even HP/eMachine/Compost seem to be going with multiple-colored or lit-up cases now. Anyways...

same MOBO (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131196)
same VID CARD (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150173)

current total price is in my range so im happy: ~$1,270 (after tax/shipping)

this is what it stands so far, im looking for a few good hard drives. i hear seagate is one of the best (from many sources) but in the past ive always had western digital. none of my hard drives have broken except that one that was brand new and when i installed it i heard the chip crack when i connected the power (oops) but i got a free replacement from bestbuy so i had a new one that day.

im not 100% how much room i should have. im thinking on buying a 2 huge RAID ones to put in this (server-ish) computer to run music videos etc off. any suggestions would kick ass. thx again might end up needing 4-6 hard drives.
current storage uses: music (27 gigs) videos (50 gigs) cd images (123 gigs) i frap alot and need room for games that are like 5+gigs.
my current HDD space: C is at 37/74gigs, D is at 125/149gigs, E is at 230/298gigs (all numbers are in space used/space total)
plz suggest size and brand (or give links)

thx again!

When you actually start building it and parts aren't working, always remember, if something fails, always assume its the cable first, its the easiest thing to fix. Unlike me who forgot this and spent the day fighting to get my new sata drive detected by my bios and windows. damn faulty power cable.

Hmm, ok. I went with the Zalman 9700 led. Its got that blue led stuff your looking for. I'll get you a pic of mine later, through my case window. It comes with a fan controller, but I dinn't install in. I plugged it straight into the motherboard, so mine runs 2800RPM 100% of the time.

N/A
Tech Level: somewhat high
Ownership: 1 month to 1 year

Great.

Pros: 100% stable out of the box, but thats expected. OC'd decently too.

Cons: Could only get somewhere between 450-475 FSB. Won't boot at 475, but is stable at 450.

Other Thoughts: Couldn't get past 475 FSB, but I haven't really tried pushing the voltage because I have it in a Lian Li case with the inverted MoBo design. Curious about what other people are getting. BTW I'm running it with Ballistix PC8000 and E6320.

I read all of the reviews for the P5N-E and couldn’t find any FSB issues.

Does this deserve some rep points? :)

i would if i could.. given u to much rep already.. wont let me :(

anyway i think im swaying to quad core. only thing that seems to beat it, on occasion, is dual core extreme (and thats a few $100s more)

is there anything else i should know? ill probably buy it in a few weeks or so.

There are not many applications out there that can utilize quad. A few games, Chysis and Alan Wake are all the games I can recall(maybe some others). If you use AutoCAD or decoding, you should go quad. The reason I didnt get a quad is, Im gonna build a new comp in about 4-5 months anyway.

So, how long before you think you'll get a new comp? The quad is more futureproof, but there's not a lot of apps that utilize quads right now.

i was thinking within a month for this computer. i usually buy one about every 1.5-2 years. i do video editing and have messed around with massive 3D programs. a friend of mine wants me to get solid works (kinda like autocad but alot more in-depth and used for CNC machines) even when it wasnt in the top 5 the quad core was within the top 10ish. i think im ganna go ahead with the quad. thx again for all your input.

I would buy from somewhere that guaranties GO stepping as opposed to B3 stepping. Its the 95watt version of the Q6600 that runs quite a bit cooler so overclocking limits are raised further.

alright then, im about 95% sure this will be my setup i buy... spent a little over my intended budget, totaling out at about $1,900 (shipping/tax included), but i believe it will be a enjoyable investment. All is going to be bought from newegg because ive always used them in the past and have always been satisfied thus far.

the system is as follows:
MOBO (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131196)
CPU (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017)
VIDEO CARD (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150232)
RAM (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148070)
PSU (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341002)
CASE (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021)
CPU heatsink (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118019)
HARD DRIVES 2x (raid0) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136039)
DVD ROM (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16827151151)

im not ganna get monitors / speakers cus im just ganna use my current ones so that saves a good amount of cash =P

/edit: forgot hard drives and DVD rom so up goes my prices another hundred or so.

any last comments on this? most of the rebates on these items ($85 end 9/16 and 9/30 so ill either buy on the 16th, or about the 25th-ish. (thinking 25th cus something else will probably go on sale and i get paid the 20th)

thx for everyones help, it made this so much easier.
